Americans throw away 40% of the food they buy that is almost $400 a year per person and an estimated 133 billion pounds.We could save 2 percent of all U.S energy consumption if we stopped wasting food.
Thousands of tons of food are lost daily because they are thrown in the trash informed the director general of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Graziano da Silva, director general of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said,the organization's figures show that between:-
"A third to 40% (food) is thrown away or lost in one way or another.The pressure that has on natural resources is incredible"
He noted that if one considers that in 2025 the planet will supply more than 9,000 million people,
"Really unthinkable that we can continue with that level of waste"
He said that:-
"Some of the food is lost in the chain of production, storage which primarily affects the less developed countries"
Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) is promoting changes to the storage system in developing countries, investment in infrastructure to improve roads and also started a campaign with the help of the private sector, so that "from the consumer side, ourselves, we can begin to take attitudes in this regard to support waste reduction, " said the director of the international organization.
He cited the expiration date yoghurts, whose concept was to preserve milk for a long time, and are thrown away when the day is supposed to lose its force.
Graziano spoke at the closing session of the Regional Conference 33era Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) guidelines that the next two years and support the initiative for Latin America and the Caribbean without Hunger 2025 were agreed. The project emphasizes the development of family farming and rural areas and aims to improve the food and agriculture national and regional systems.
